The Solar Powered Basketball

Don’t laugh. Kobe Bryant is very serious about his concept: the solar powered basketball. So serious, in fact, that he has been working on it for about 15 years. This is his brainchild and it is something he is exceptionally thrilled about. And maybe it can be used in this solar powered indoor basketball facility some day.

The truth is, most basketballs end up in the trash a short time after they get swished through the hoops. This is because in the professional field they are often smashed into the floor or end up exploding when they hit someone in the crowd. This makes basketball one of the world’s most expensive sports since the balls have to be constantly replaced.

Kobe Bryant has set out to change that stigma with his company, GreenTeam. Having founded the company with the purpose of determining a means in which to make basketball less wasteful, the solar powered basketball is his idea. And, he believes it just might change the face of basketball as we know it.

The solar powered basketball was supposed to be demoed in October of 2017. The fact that we haven’t heard much about it might mean it was less of a success than Kobe had hoped. After all, his dreams were to see all basketballs replaced by the “SolarBall” by 2019. We’re still waiting to see if that happens.
